Quick Facts:
  • Huge supercharged V-8 engine cranks out 638 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque.
  • Expected to be the first production Corvette with a top speed of more than 200 mph.
  • ZR1 rides on 20-spoke 19-inch front wheels and 20-inch rear wheels.
  • Only two options: chrome wheels and a “luxury” package.

The new 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is one of those cars that just makes your jaw drop, even when you're only reading about it on paper (or on a computer screen).

At the heart of the new Vette monster is its engine: a supercharged 6.2 liter V-8 engine that delivers an impressive 638 horsepower (more than 100 horsepower per liter, which is really good in the automotive world).

The engine also cranks out an impressive 604 pound-feet of torque. When you think that 200 pound-feet of torque is a lot for any car, the ZR1's might really shows through.

To help the ZR1 even more is extensive use of light-weight carbon-fiber materials which helps the car make better use of all that power.

“It all boils down to the power-to-weight ratio and the ZR1’s is exceptional – better than the Porsche 911 GT2, the Ferrari 599 and even the Lamborghini LP640," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. "In fact, the ZR1 is expected to be the first production Corvette to achieve a top speed of at least 200 mph.”

With so much going for it already, the ZR1 only offers two options: chrome wheels and a "luxury" interior package that includes features like power-adjustable leather-trimmed seats, a navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity.
