Rome, Italy -- (Sports Network) - Italian cyclist Davide Rebellin has been stripped of the silver medal he won in the road event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics because of a doping violation.

The International Olympic Committee notified the Italian Olympic Committee of its decision Tuesday.

Spain's Samuel Sanchez won the gold medal and Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland finished third. Russia's Alexander Kolobnev was fourth.

There was no word from the IOC as to whether Cancellara and Kolobnev would be moved up in the order of finish.
