Saturday, November 29, 2008
Portland, OR -- (Sports Network) - Kramer Knutson tallied a team-best 15 points, leading four players in double figures, as the University of Portland Pilots held on to defeat the Nevada Wolf Pack, 63-61, in non-conference action at the Chiles Center. T.J. Campbell converted 4-of-4 behind the three-point line as the Pilots (4-1) picked up their third straight win. Nik Raivio tacked on 11 points and eight rebounds, followed by Robin Smeulders who tallied 10 points in the victory. The Wolf Pack (2-3) was paced by Luke Babbitt with his game-high 17 points, adding eight rebounds, while Malik Cooke chipped in 11 points in the setback. Portland made good on an even 50 percent form the field in the first half, but because the squad converted only 3-of-9 beyond the arc it had to settle for a 37-33 deficit at the break. In the second half the Pilots picked up the pace on the perimeter, knocking down 4-of-6 behind the three-point line in claiming the two-point win. Portland nearly let the victory slip away with a mere 10-of-22 shooting at the free-throw line, but managed to stay ahead by holding Nevada to 4-of-17 behind the three-point line and forcing 18 turnovers on the night.
