New Mexico State (2-1) At Long Beach State (2-2)
GAME NOTES: The Long Beach State 49ers try to follow up a couple of overtime wins with a victory in regulation today as they entertain the New Mexico State Aggies in non-conference action at the Walter Pyramid. After losing back-to- back games against BYU and Wisconsin on the road to begin 2008-09, the 49ers have won two in a row, but have had to go to overtime to do so. On November 22nd, the team topped Weber State at home in a 73-69 decision and then followed that with an 88-83 double-overtime triumph on Tuesday night versus Idaho State in Pocatello. Meanwhile, the Aggies have played just three games thus far, taking both decisions at home in Las Cruces and losing on the road to USC 11 days ago. On November 21st, the last outing for NMSU, it managed to crush Pepperdine in a 90-66 final. As far as the all-time series is concerned, NMSU is ahead by a count of 21-17, having won the last two encounters. The most recent of those battles came last February as the Aggies crushed LBSU in an 80-48 final in Las Cruces.
New Mexico State went from shooting 45.5 percent from the field in the first half to an incredible 67.7 percent from the floor after the break, en route to the huge win over Pepperdine. Jahmar Young scored a team-best 21 points, handed out six assists and grabbed six rebounds, while Jonathan Gibson tacked on 20 points and a team-best seven assists as well. Troy Gillenwater and Wendell McKines posted 19 and 18 points, respectively. Young leads the Aggies in scoring through three games with his 18.3 ppg, followed by Gillenwater and Gibson with 17.0 and 15.3 ppg, respectively. McKines (9.7 ppg) has handled the glass with almost seven boards per game, but for someone who handles the ball as much as he does, McKines needs to do better than a mere four assists. Defensively the Aggies are limiting opponents to just 40.1 percent shooting from the field and 26.3 percent behind the three-point line.
Donovan Morris sank 14-of-16 shots at the free-throw line as he posted a team- best 24 points in the win over Idaho State the last time out. Stephan Gilling chipped in 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting behind the three-point line, followed by Casper Ware who dropped in 15 points and recorded four steals. Larry Anderson came off the bench to offer up 10 points and five rebounds in his 33 minutes of action for a squad that survived 17 turnovers and 24-of-35 shooting at the free-throw line. Morris has led the team in scoring in all four games thus far for LBSU and is up to 17.3 ppg overall, thanks to a healthy dose of 21-of-24 at the charity stripe. Morris could stand to pick some better shot options from the floor, having his just 39.6 percent of his attempts. But as poorly as Morris has been hitting his shots, Gilling (12.8 ppg) is even further down at only 36.4 percent, yet he has made 42.1 percent of his three- point tries.
Morris can certainly put points on the board for the 49ers, but he's just one guy against a multitude of scorers for New Mexico State.
