Hansbrough Leads Top-Ranked Tar Heels To Maui Title

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

(Sports Network) - Tyler Hansbrough looked rather healthy hitting 13-of-19 from the floor on his way to 34 points, as North Carolina lived up to its top billing in the country with a convincing 102-87 victory over No. 8 Notre Dame in the championship round of the Maui Invitational.

Ty Lawson orchestrated the Tar Heels (6-0) offense and finished with 22 points, 11 assists and six rebounds while earning Tournament MVP honors. Deon Thompson logged 19 points and 13 boards for Carolina, which has won all six of its games to open the season by at least 15 points.

Kyle McAlarney single-handedly carried Notre Dame (4-1) while setting a school record with 10 three-pointers en route to a 39-point effort. Luke Harangody posted a mediocre 13-point, seven-rebound performance for the Fighting Irish, who earned a bid to the finals with an 81-80 victory over sixth-ranked Texas in the semis.

The outcome of the game seemed firmly in Carolina's hands until a 20-8 Notre Dame run between the 8:27 and 5:11 mark of the second half made things interesting. The Irish hit five three-pointers in the span, including two consecutive by McAlarney to get ND within 84-73.

After a defensive stop, Tory Jackson missed a free throw and the Heels regained momentum with a two-handed dunk from Danny Green followed by a Lawson steal and subsequent fastbreak layup.

Hansbrough's three-point play several minutes later pumped the UNC lead to 15 and it was smooth sailing for the top-seed from there.

It was the Hansbrough-Lawson show in the first half as the pair combined for 28 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Leading 26-21 midway through the half, the pair scored eight of the next 10 points, highlighted by a Lawson three-point play and a jumper from Hansbrough.

McAlarney hit a deep three and sunk three free throws in the final two minutes to get the Irish within 46-36 at the break.

Notre Dame, which shot just 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from three-point land in the first half, came out of the locker room even colder. Carolina kept getting into the lane for easy buckets and scored 10 of the first 14 points of the half, as the Irish continued to miss amongst UNC's man-to-man defense.
