Saturday, October 18, 2008
Ypsilanti, MI -- (Sports Network) - Dennis Kennedy's four-yard touchdown run with 14 seconds left was the difference, as the Akron Zips edged the Eastern Michigan Eagles, 42-35, in Mid-American Conference play at Rynearson Stadium. Kennedy finished the game with a career-high 277 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries, as Akron (4-4, 2-2 MAC) won its fourth straight road game. Chris Jacquemain completed 11-of-19 pass attempts for 208 yards and two touchdowns in the win, while Andre Jones hauled in five balls for 114 yards and a pair of scores. Andy Schmitt led the way for EMU (2-6, 1-3) by throwing for 258 yards and three touchdowns on 22-of-34 passes. Jacory Stone caught seven of those tosses for 109 yards, while Terrence Blevins toted 21 times for 91 yards and two touchdowns in the setback. Akron's Igor Iveljic connected on a 26-yard field goal less than three minutes into the game and that accounted for the only points of the first quarter. Less than three minutes into the second period, the Zips extended their lead on the strength of a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jacquemain to Jones. EMU responded a few minutes later, as Blevins scurried three yards for a touchdown. The Zips, however, answered immediately, scoring on their first play of the ensuing series courtesy of a Jacquemain 45-yard touchdown toss to Jones. With under five minutes left in the opening half, the Eagles cut into the Zips' lead with a five-yard scoring strike from Schmitt to Tyler Jones. A 33-yard touchdown run by Kennedy late in the second quarter gave Akron a 24-14 lead at the break. The Eagles made it a three-point game with a one-yard touchdown run by Blevins early in the third quarter. Less than two minutes later, Akron answered with a 10-yard run to paydirt by Kennedy. Iveljic hit a 27-yard field goal just 50 seconds into the final frame and Akron held a 34-21 lead. EMU, though, refused to go away and made it a one-score game following a 19- yard touchdown pass from Schmitt to Marvon Sanders. With just under four minutes left, Josh Leduc hauled in a six-yard touchdown pass from Schmitt to give the Eagles a 35-34 lead. The Zips, however, were resilient themselves and drove down field for the victory. It was a bizarre finish, though. On a fourth-and-two with 30 seconds left, Akron elected to kick a field goal. The kick was blocked by EMU, but fortunately for Akron, the ball bounced to holder Andy Hildreth, who ran four yards for the first down. Akron immediately capitalized with a four-yard touchdown run by Kennedy with 14 seconds left. The Zips tacked on a successful two-point conversion for the final score of 42-35. For the game, Akron amassed 547 yards of total offense, including 339 via the run.
