NCAA Game Summary - Purdue At Iowa

Saturday, November 15, 2008

(Sports Network) - Shonn Greene ran for 211 yards and two touchdowns, as he carried the Iowa Hawkeyes to a 22-17 win over the Purdue Boilermakers in a Big Ten Conference showdown at Kinnick Stadium.

With Greene carrying the load on offense for Iowa (3-8, 1-6 Big Ten), quarterback Ricky Stanzi attempted only 15 passes and threw for 79 yards. Greene is the only player in the Football Bowl Subdivision to have rushed for at least 100 yards in every game this season. This was his second 200-yard rushing performance.

Purdue (7-4, 4-3) quarterback Curtis Painter completed 24-of-30 passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Desmond Tardy finished with 13 catches for 131 yards and a score, while Greg Orton caught 10 passes for 76 yards and a TD.

Iowa drew first blood on a 22-yard touchdown run by Jewel Hampton at the 8:38 mark of the opening quarter. However, Trent Mossbrucker's extra-point attempt failed.

The Boilermakers' third possession of the game lasted 17 plays and ate up nearly nine minutes, but they had to settle for three points on a 27-yard field goal by Carson Wiggs.

Less than a minute later, Greene broke loose for a 75-yard touchdown run. But again, Mossbrucker's extra point was no good.

The Boilermakers orchestrated their two-minute offense to perfection just before the half, and Painter connected with Tardy for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 34 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Iowa turned to kicker Daniel Murray for a 45-yard field goal attempt at the 9:14 mark of the third quarter, which he booted through the uprights to give the Hawkeyes a 15-10 lead.

Greene struck again in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, this time finding the end zone on a 14-yard run to extend the Hawkeyes' advantage to 22-10.

But the Boilermakers made things interesting late in the game. Painter threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Orton with 3:40 to play, cutting the deficit to five.

With 1:09 remaining, Painter drove the Boilermakers down the field by completing 6-of-8 passes. But Iowa defensive tackle Mitch King came up with a big sack on that drive, which threw the Purdue offense off its rhythm.

While Greene and the Hawkeyes' running game was operating at top level, the Boilermakers struggled on the ground, averaging just 2.7 yards per carry as a team.
