GAME NOTES: The Kansas Jayhawks look to remain in the hunt for the North Division title, as they tangle with the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a key Big 12 matchup at Memorial Stadium. The Jayhawks got back on track this past weekend, as they punished instate foe Kansas State, 52-21. The win brought the team's two-game slide to a stop and made Kansas bowl eligible for the fourth consecutive year. With the victory, the Jayhawks also kept pace with Missouri for first place in the North Division at 3-2. Kansas will clash with Missouri in its regular-season finale, but first must get past Nebraska and Texas. Speaking of the Huskers, they dipped a game back of both Kansas and Missouri following an embarrassing 62-28 setback at Oklahoma this past weekend. The loss snapped the team's two-game win streak and dropped it to 5-4 overall and 2-3 within the conference. Nebraska though, now returns back home, where it has posted four wins against two defeats. The Huskers also own a commanding 88-23-3 lead in the all-time series with Kansas and that includes 19 straight victories in Lincoln, dating back to 1968. The Jayhawks have had great success moving the ball this season, as they are producing 146.6 ypg on the ground and an even better 299.0 through the air. The team is averaging 34.4 ppg, with 19 touchdowns courtesy of the run and another 20 coming via the pass. Last weekend, Kansas and its ground attack stole the show, as the team rolled up 280 of its 469 yards on the ground en route to a 52-21 win over Kansas State. Jake Sharp led the charge with 181 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries. He also paced the team with five receptions for 76 yards. It was quite an effort by Sharp, who has gained 647 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground this season. Quarterback Todd Reesing added 47 rushing yards and a score last weekend, while also passing for 162 yards and another touchdown. On the season, Reesing has chipped in with 168 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, but he has excelled through the air, completing 68.4 percent of his tosses for 293.1 ypg, with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Kerry Meier and Dezmon Briscoe have been his main two outlets and they have combined for 120 catches, 1,542 yards and 14 touchdowns. Both players caught three balls for 40 yards last weekend, but Briscoe also had a touchdown. Kansas has lacked consistency on defense this season and heads into this weekend giving up 26.3 ppg and 381.3 total ypg. The defense has done a decent job against the run, allowing 110.8 ypg, but has been exploited for 270.6 ypg through the air. Last weekend, the Jayhawks put forth a solid effort, as they limited Kansas State to 355 total yards, including only 91 via the run. The defense also created some big plays, forcing five turnovers and notching three sacks. James Holt turned in a big effort in the win, as he recorded two sacks, a pair of forced fumbles and five tackles. On the year, he tops the roster in tackles (71), TFLs (11) and forced fumbles (five), to go along with four sacks. Nebraska is certainly a team that can match Kansas offensively, as the Huskers are gaining 443.0 total ypg, with 155.2 of those ypg coming on the ground. Last weekend, the Huskers displayed a balanced attack of 204 rushing yards and 214 passing, but they committed four turnovers in a lopsided loss at Oklahoma. Hanging onto the ball has been an issues for Nebraska, which has now turned the ball over 18 times this season. Quarterback Joe Ganz threw a pair of interceptions last game and he finished with 206 yards and just one touchdown. For the season, Ganz has tossed eight picks, but he has been rather effective in completing 68.6 percent of his pass attempts for 278.8 ypg. He has totaled 19 touchdowns, three rushing, and ranks fourth on the team with 161 yards on the ground. Nate Swift and Todd Peterson are his main targets and they have combined for 92 receptions, 1,217 yards and nine scores. Last weekend, Swift pulled down three balls for 83 yards and a score, while Peterson made five catches for 73 yards. In the backfield, Marlon Lucky leads the team with 463 yards and seven scores, but Roy Helu Jr. has shown some excitement and is hot on his heels with 451 yards despite 44 less carries. Helu Jr. also carried the load last weekend, toting 16 times for 157 yards and a touchdown. Slowing down opposing clubs hasn't been a strength of the Huskers this season, as they are yielding 28.4 ppg and 375.3 total ypg. The unit has struggled versus the run (143.3 ypg) as well as pass (231.9 ypg) and hasn't forced many turnovers, generating only nine thus far. Facing an elite offense last weekend, Nebraska was torched for 508 total yards, including 193 rushing, in a loss to Oklahoma. The defense only forced one turnover, while allowing eight touchdowns to the Sooners' offense. Larry Asante led the Huskers with 13 tackles and he also paces the squad with 55 stops for the year. Neither program possesses a defense worth mentioning and that should lead to a high scoring affair. Kansas appears to be a little more explosive than the Huskers and that should help it slip by on the road this weekend.
