William & Mary Game With Maine Cancelled
Tuesday, September 23,
Williamsburg, VA -- Saturday's football game between Maine
and William & Mary has been cancelled due to damage caused by Hurricane
Isabel. The game, which was scheduled for September 27 at Zable Stadium in
Williamsburg, was scrapped in order to deal with continuing concerns about the
safety of the campus. The college will be closed through Sunday, September 28. "At this time of immense natural disaster, our first responsibility is to
protect the health and welfare of our employees, including those in the
athletic department, who for the last week have worked beyond any reasonable
standard of human endurance," said William and Mary president Tim Sullivan.
"Our second responsibility is to make our campus safe for the resumption of
classes at the earliest possible time. Regrettably, to host a football game or
accommodate a hastily arranged effort to transport our football team to an off
campus location is not a priority of equal urgency." The next game for 24th-ranked Maine (2-2, 1-1 A-10) will be a home contest
against Richmond on October 4. William & Mary will play at Delaware on the
same day.
