Saturday, November 15, 2008
Ann Arbor, MI -- (Sports Network) - CJ Bacher threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns, as the Northwestern Wildcats upended the Michigan Wolverines, 21-14, in a Big Ten Conference tilt at Michigan Stadium. Bacher completed 17-of-29 attempts, though he was also intercepted twice and sacked three times. Ross Lane caught seven passes for 77 yards and a score for the Wildcats (8-3, 4-3 Big Ten), who improve to 4-1 on the road this season. Carlos Brown carried 23 times for 115 yards for Michigan (3-8, 2-5), but his efforts weren't enough to prevent the first eight-loss season in program history. Nick Sheridan completed only 8-of-29 passes for 61 yards and found himself on the bench in the fourth quarter. Backup Steven Threet was intercepted in the end zone on his first drive, then went down with an injury on then next drive. Northwestern went three-and-out on its second offensive possession, but Michigan fumbled away the punt and the Wildcats took over with good field position. Five plays later, NU running back Stephen Simmons scored on a 21- yard run. Later in the first quarter, Michigan tied the score at seven apiece on a three-yard touchdown run by Sheridan. The Wolverines took the lead midway through the second quarter, when the special teams blocked a punt and Ricky Reyes returned it three yards to pay dirt. But the Wildcats later returned the favor with a partially blocked punt early in the third quarter, which set the Northwestern offense up with the ball on the Michigan 40. One minute later, Bacher found Lane for a 17-yard touchdown pass to knot the score at 14. The deciding touchdown was scored on a 53-yard pass from Bacher to Eric Peterman at the 9:24 mark of the third quarter. The Wolverines managed only 264 yards of total offense, as they converted just 5-of-20 third downs.
