NCAA Game Summary - Purdue At Michigan State

Saturday, November 8, 2008

(Sports Network) - Javon Ringer ran for 121 yards and a pair of scores to lead 18th-ranked Michigan State to a 21-7 victory over Purdue at Spartan Stadium.

Ringer carried the ball 32 times and kept the Boilermakers on their toes for most of the game, as the Spartans (9-2, 6-1 Big Ten) posted their third straight win. Michigan State, which is bowl bound once again, got a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown from defensive back Johnny Adams.

Brian Hoyer passed for 154 yards with two interceptions for Michigan State. The Spartans will have a week off before a showdown with the Penn State Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium on November 22.

"We just kept playing and stayed in the moment," MSU head coach Mark Dantonio said after the game. "We got it done."

Justin Siller passed for 83 yards with a costly interception and also ran for a score for the Boilermakers (3-7, 1-5), who have all but dismantled their hopes for a bowl bid. Kory Sheets ran for 93 yards on 22 touches in defeat, as Purdue suffered its sixth loss in seven games.

The Spartans took advantage of a poor punt by Purdue's Chris Summers, whose 18-yard boot set up MSU's first touchdown.

Michigan State started from the Boilermakers' 47-yard line and marched all the way down the field, capping the drive on Ringer's one-yard touchdown run on fourth down to make it 7-0 with 9:53 to go in the opening quarter.

Both teams then stalled on offense for the rest of the first half, but the Spartans grabbed a 14-0 advantage on Adams' 40-yard interception return for a touchdown. Adams stepped in front of a Siller pass and rumbled to the end zone with only nine seconds to go before halftime.

Ringer found the end zone again on a one-yard touchdown run at 10:23 of the third quarter, giving the Spartans a 21-0 advantage. Ringer left the game with about four minutes to go in the third quarter because of a leg injury, but was able to return.

"We were blessed today," Ringer said. "This win means so much."

Siller's one-yard TD run with under a minute remaining completed the scoring.
