NCAA Game Summary - New Mexico State At Texas El-Paso

POSTED: 10:23 pm PDT September 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - Chase Holbrook completed 29-of-39 passes for 329 yards and five touchdowns to lead the New Mexico State Aggies to a 34-33 victory over the Texas-El Paso Miners in non-conference action.

Chris Williams caught seven passes for 119 yards for New Mexico State (1-1).

James Thomas ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns on only 19 carries in the loss for Texas-El Paso (0-3).

Texas-El Paso led 10-0 after the first quarter. Jose Martinez opened the scoring with a 44-yard field goal, and Anthony Morrow intercepted a Holbrook pass on the ensuing possession and raced 27 yards for a touchdown.

Holbrook made up for his mistake in the second quarter, throwing back-to-back touchdown passes to give his Aggies a 14-10 lead. After a 36-yard strike to Marcus Anderson, the signal caller hit Anderson again for an 11-yard touchdown.

Thomas answered back for UTEP, giving the Miners a 17-14 advantage with 6:48 remaining in the first half on a 44-yard touchdown scamper.

Holbrook then fired a 27-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Harris with just over four minutes left in the opening half, giving the Aggies a 21-17 lead.

In the final minute of the first half, Martinez connected on a 36-yard field goal, and the Miners trailed 21-20 at intermission.

Once again, a Holbrook mistake hurt the Aggies in the third quarter. The quarterback fumbled the football and it was recovered by UTEP's Robert Soleyjacks, who rumbled 24 yards for a touchdown. That big defensive play gave the Miners a 27-21 edge.

Fortunately, Holbrook continued to fight and threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Wes Neiman on the ensuing drive. That toss put the Aggies ahead once again by a 28-27 margin.

Thomas opened the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown run to put the Miners back in front by a score of 33-28. Unfortunately for UTEP, its two- point conversion attempt failed, as a run by Thomas was stuffed.

With 11:21 left in the game, Holbrook hit Anderson with a 15-yard touchdown pass to put the Aggies up by the slimmest of margins, 34-33. Although a two- point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, the New Mexico State defense stiffened and preserved the one-point victory.

The teams combined for seven turnovers, including four by the winning Aggies.

UTEP has now lost its last nine outings, while New Mexico State halted a six- game losing skid with the triumph.
