Every year the Latino Research Center (LRC) hosts a community event to celebrate Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) on the UNR campus. Students, university organizations and members of the community are invited to take part in the festivities and are encouraged to submit altars to the exhibition. The celebration will take place on Saturday, October 20 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Joe Crowley Student Union, Ballroom C. Although the tradition of Day of the Dead comes from the ancient Aztecs of Mesoamerica, it is now celebrated throughout the world. Everyone is invited to participate and observe the rich heritage of this event through a variety of activities for all ages. Food, beverages and music will be provided for all guests, as well as arts and crafts for children including mask making, face painting, and decorating sugar skulls. To preserve and share the traditions of this holiday, the Latino Research Center will be providing an exhibition area for altars. Altars with food offerings and other items are displayed to honor the lives of those who have passed. The deadline for requesting a space for an altar entry is Friday, October 19. Tables will be provided to those who have requested space. Please call 784-4010 or E-mail latinocenter@unr.edu to request space for altar entry. This event is made possible, in part, by the support of the City of Reno.
