YORK, Pa. -- Starting Saturday, a gallon of milk will cost you a lot more.
Last week, the state Milk Marketing Board agreed to a 58 cent per gallon increase.Alan Taylor is a third-generation York County dairy farmer. He gets up at 5 a.m. every morning to milk his cows.Lately, what has been coming out of the cows might as well be gold. That's because the price of milk has skyrocked. Lower supply is one of the factors for the price increase.Taylor couldn't be happier."Almost got to the point when you have a bottom line that can give you a good living, hope it stays that way," Taylor said.In the last two months, the rising price of milk has brought in an extra $9,000 for the York County farmer. Still, he said it could be a lot more. He said many people believe the price they pay for milk is what farmers receive."That's not correct. We get about half," Taylor said,Saturday, the price of milk is expected to jump again. A gallon of milk is expected to go up by 58 cents. For many Susquehanna Valley consumers, that will push the average price of milk up to about $3.77."When that price goes up, the out-of-store price goes up. But that is to compensate and that money does go back to the dairy farmer," said Tracey Jackson, with the Milk Marketing Board.Taylor has 130 cows. While the herd is making him money right now, he remembers not too long ago when the value of raw milk was at a 25-year low.
