SAN FRANCISCO -- UCSF dermatologist Dr. Jack Resneck Thursday warned people to be extra careful about use of sunscreen. Labels may oversell your level of real protection.“There’s no such thing as a ‘waterproof’ sunscreen,” says Dr. Resneck, adding “the Sun Protection Factor you read on the label may also be somewhat misleading.”The US Food and Drug Administration now says it will revise its controversial regulations on sunscreen labels. Under fire from consumer groups and even one state attorney general, the FDA says its new regulations should be out within a few weeks.A class-action lawsuit against several manufacturers charges the hype on the label doesn’t match the performance of the product.“It’s like selling snake oil,” says class-action attorney Sam Rudman.Manufacturers say they fully comply with current regulations.
