Velazquez Released From Kentucky Hospital

POSTED: 2:08 pm PDT October 4, 2008

(Sports Network) - Award-winning jockey John Velazquez has been released from the University of Kentucky Medical Center one day after being injured at Keeneland on Friday. Velazquez sustained a concussion and will be sidelined until further notice.

The two-time Eclipse Award winner was involved in a spill during the running of Keeneland's seventh race Friday. While aboard Tap Dancing, Velazquez and his horse collided with Whacka Whacka, who fell after clipping the heels of Rapid Mons.

According to Keeneland's Jim Williams and staff, Velazquez was 'arousable' at the track's first aid station and transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Jamie Theriot was the rider on Whacka Whacka, but suffered no severe injuries and was cleared to continue riding.

The 37-year-old Velazquez currently ranks as North America's sixth-leading rider by earnings with more than $11.4 million and 10th with 191 wins.

Neither of the horses involved in the spill were injured and both returned to their respective barns.
