American League Game Capsules

POSTED: 12:38 am PDT July 25, 2008

(Sports Network) - Lyle Overbay went 2-for-4 with a run batted in, and Toronto pitching racked up 11 strikeouts as the Blue Jays topped the Baltimore Orioles, 5-1, in the conclusion of a game that was suspended in the sixth inning Wednesday due to rain. The game was halted for 1 hour, 44 minutes on Wednesday before the umpires decided to suspend the game and resume it Thursday afternoon. Marco Scutaro and John McDonald each knocked in a run for the Blue Jays, winners in three of their last four games. A.J. Burnett (11-9) allowed a run on six hits in five innings Wednesday -- striking out seven without allowing a walk -- to pick up the win. Aubrey Huff tripled and Melvin Mora knocked in the lone run for the Orioles, who have lost three of four. Jeremy Guthrie (6-8) surrendered two runs on six hits in 5 2/3 frames and took the loss, while Lance Cormier allowed two unearned runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Final Score: Toronto 7, Baltimore 1 (Game 2)

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Roy Halladay was his usual efficient self on the hill, allowing just one run through seven innings in Toronto's 7-1 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles in the finale of their four-game series. Before Halladay shut down the O's, Toronto needed to finish off Wednesday's rain- suspended game that was halted with the Jays leading 2-1 in the sixth inning. The Jays bullpen backed up A.J. Burnett's strong start on Wednesday to come away with the 5-1 win. After the first conquest, Halladay (12-7) scattered seven hits and a walk, while striking out six to improve to 18-4 in 28 lifetime appearances -- 24 starts -- against the Orioles. Gregg Zaun and Lyle Overbay each knocked in a pair of runs for Toronto, which recorded 13 hits in its fourth win in five games. Adam Lind was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for the victors. Daniel Cabrera (6-6) was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs on 11 hits and a pair of walks in five-plus innings of work. Aubrey Huff and Melvin Mora each had two hits for the Orioles, who have lost four of their last five.

Final Score: Kansas City 4, Tampa Bay 2

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Gil Meche was brilliant on the hill and John Buck drove in two runs, as the Kansas City Royals staved off a late comeback by the Tampa Bay Rays to take a 4-2 victory. Meche (8-9) yielded just five hits while fanning four batters and walking only one over seven scoreless innings. Joakim Soria gave up a run in the ninth, but still managed to earn his 27th save. Ross Gload and Mark Grudzielanek knocked in a run each for the Royals, who snapped a three-game skid. Matt Garza (8-6) was saddled with the loss as he gave up all four runs on eight hits while walking four hitters. J.P. Howell, Grant Balfour and Dan Wheeler combined to throw three innings of two-hit ball. B.J. Upton had an RBI for the Rays, who have lost seven straight on the road. Cliff Floyd drove in the other run for TB. Jason Bartlett, who was activated from the disabled list prior to the game, went 3-for-3 and scored a run.
