American League Game Summary - Kansas City At Detroit

POSTED: 8:22 pm PDT August 29, 2008

(Sports Network) - Zach Miner gave the Tigers six solid innings and Detroit went on to top Kansas City, 6-3, in the opener of a three-game set from Comerica Park.

Miner (8-4) allowed just one run on six hits and one walk while striking out two, and set a career high for wins in a season. Curtis Granderson and Jeff Larish had two RBI each for the Tigers, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

"He was effective tonight. When he's a starter, he's a four-pitch pitcher. His curveball and slider are getting better," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said of Miner's conversion from reliever to starter this season.

Mark Teahen homered in a 2-for-4 effort and Mike Aviles had three hits and an RBI in defeat for the Royals, who were most recently swept in three games by Texas and have dropped 11 of 12 overall.

Kyle Davies (5-6) dropped his fourth consecutive start in convincing fashion as the right-hander was knocked around in a six-run fifth -- he was touched for all six runs, two of which were earned, and allowed six of his eight hits in the frame. He walked one and struck out two.

The Royals jumped on top on Teahen's leadoff homer to right in the second inning, and the game stayed that way until the fifth when Detroit got six runs off Davies.

Marcus Thames reached on an error and moved to second on an Edgar Renteria single through the left side. After Brandon Inge went down swinging, Granderson drove a triple to the gap in right-center and came home when Placido Polanco followed with a single to right.

Magglio Ordonez kept the inning going with a single and both he and Polanco executed a double steal, setting up a two-run single from Larish. Larish moved to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Gary Sheffield base hit that chased Davies. Kip Wells came on for the final out.

"A couple of guys get on and Curtis comes up with the big hit and it kept coming. Guys kept getting good pitches to hit and they were finding the holes," Larish said of the big inning.

Kansas City got a run off Bobby Seay in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-2. Joey Gathright doubled to right leading off and scored when Aviles followed with a single. Alberto Callaspo then singled, but Gary Glover, who came on to relieve Seay, later got Jose Guillen to hit into an inning-ending double play.

The Royals got a leadoff single from Teahen in the eighth, facing Kyle Farnsworth, but Billy Butler grounded into a double play and Ross Gload went down swinging.

"Not enough production. Not enough two-out hits, that's a big part of it," Royals manager Trey Hillman said when describing the club's offensive struggles.

Those stunted rallies proved costly as Fernando Rodney walked John Buck on four straight pitches to start the ninth. Buck later scored on a force out to make it 6-3, but Rodney eventually got David DeJesus to ground out to finish the game.
