American League Game Summary - Oakland At Tampa Bay

POSTED: 11:58 pm PDT July 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jack Hannahan went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and career-high four runs batted in, as Oakland snapped a six-game losing streak with an 8-1 win over Tampa Bay.

Dallas Braden (2-0) picked up the win after allowing just one run on four hits and four walks in this middle test of a three-game series. Jerry Blevins, Brad Ziegler and Huston Street combined to throw four shutout innings to finish the game.

"It's ginormous, I mean everyone in the dugout was excited," Braden, who made his first start of the season, said of the win. "Obviously it's a big break- out for us, shot in the arm as a team."

Oakland last won on July 11 against the Angels, and in the next six games scored a total of nine runs. Tuesday the club put together a nine-hit attack, with Kurt Suzuki going 3-for-4 with a double and RBI. Bobby Crosby added two hits and batted in a run.

Andy Sonnanstine (10-5) lost his second straight start despite throwing seven solid innings. He allowed just three runs on five hits, walked one and struck out five for the Rays.

Carl Crawford had two hits, while Carlos Pena had a hit and drove in the lone run for Tampa Bay, which has lost two of three.

"The solution is that we have to hit better against them," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said about left-handed pitchers, including Braden. "We were just unable to score runs. Just got to stay with it, hang with it and we'll get better at it."

Tampa Bay loaded the bases in the home third, after Akinori Iwamura walked, Crawford singled with one out and Evan Longoria worked a free pass. Pena then brought in a run with a sacrifice fly for the second out, but Crawford was caught in a rundown to end the inning.

Oakland took advantage of the opportunity and jumped in front in the fourth. Carlos Gonzalez got on base with a one-out infield single, and Crosby followed with another base hit. Hannahan then blasted a fastball left over the plate into the right field stands, pushing the Athletics in front, 3-1.

The Athletics' bullpen took over for Braden in the sixth, and after Blevins got out of that frame unscathed, Ziegler came in for the seventh and tossed two scoreless innings. The rookie made his MLB debut on May 31, and has not allowed a run since, putting his scoreless innings streak at 23 2/3. That breaks an American League record for consecutive scoreless innings to begin a career -- 22, set by Boston's Boo Ferris in 1945.

In the eighth, Oakland added some insurance runs. Suzuki hit an RBI double, while walks to Jack Cust and Gonzalez loaded the bases with one out. Crosby brought in another run with a sacrifice fly, leaving runners on first and second.

Hannahan then singled to left to plate pinch-runner Rajai Davis, and Crawford's throw from the outfield sailed by Longoria at third base, which allowed Gonzalez to cross the plate and made it a 7-1 game.

Ryan Sweeney scored in the ninth after Ben Zobrist's throwing error, to add the A's final run.

Game Notes:

Wednesday's rubber match will feature Tampa Bay's James Shields (8-6) and Oakland's Greg Smith (5-8)...Should the Rays win Wednesday, they will win their 20th series of the season, tying a franchise record set in 2005...The Athletics had lost six straight road games, and 10 of 13...Oakland infielder Mark Ellis did not play because of a sore shoulder.
