Warriors Re-Sign Biedrins To Multi-Year Deal

POSTED: 3:21 pm PDT July 28, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Golden State Warriors prevented center Andris Biedrins from following Josh Childress' jump to Europe, instead locking up the Latvian with a multi-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We're extremely happy to have Andris under contract for many years to come," said Warriors executive vice president of basketball operations Chris Mullin. "He is clearly one of the top young centers in the NBA and, much like the young player we signed a few days ago (Monta Ellis), he has continued to improve every season."

Biedrins was reportedly considering entertaining offers from European teams, and after Childress left the Hawks to sign with a Greek team, the Warriors acted quickly to make sure Biedrins didn't follow.

"I'm really excited to remain with the Warriors and continue my NBA career in the Bay Area," Biedrins said. "The organization and fans have been terrific to me over the last four years and I'm looking forward to building on some of the success that we've had in the last couple of years."

Taken 11th overall as a teenager in 2004, the 6-foot-11 Biedrins has developed into a decent big man. The 22-year-old averaged career-highs with 10.5 points and 9.8 rebounds in 27 minutes per game last season.

"It's not easy to find quality young big men in this league, but we certainly think we have one of them and he's only 22 years old," Mullin said.

The move continues a busy offseason for the Warriors, who lost point guard Baron Davis to the Clippers before adding free agent forwards Corey Maggette and Ronny Turiaf, resigning swingman Kelenna Azubuike, and trading with the Nets for point guard Marcus Williams.
