BERKELEY -- Bicycle activists have accused a motorist of trying to run them over in a clash caught on video, but police have not made any arrests. The video shot by a participant in the Critical Mass ride Friday shows a van's front wheel crushing several bicycles. Cyclists surrounding the van are seen in the video pounding on the hood and windows of the vehicle, which has disabled person license plates. The driver deliberately ran into the group of cyclists passing through an intersection during the monthly ride, according to cyclist Jason Meggs, who shot the video. Two riders were injured but declined treatment, Meggs said. The elderly motorist and his wife were trying to escape the angry crowd, according to Berkeley police, who declined to arrest the driver. Last month a van's rear window was smashed during a Critical Mass ride in San Francisco when riders said the driver recklessly accelerated into cyclists.
