Move Over Beckham, Mike Nolan's In the House

Posted: 9:11 am PDT August 7, 2007

While soccer star David Beckham's style seems to have Los Angeles abuzz, it's the sideline fashion sense of 49ers head coach Mike Nolan that captured the eye of the judges of Esquire Magazine's annual Best Dressed List.

Beckham didn't rate among the 23 men selected for this year's edition while Nolan landed at No. 11.

The magazine cited Nolan for his efforts to elevate sideline wear from polo suits and slacks to nattily tailored suits. Nolan was allowed to wear suits for a few selected games last season, but in June the NFL gave him the green light to wear them for all 49ers home games this year.

Peninsula native Tom Brady topped the annual list as much for his fashion sense as for the beautiful woman at his side -- supermodel Gisele Bundchen. The magazine cited Brady for his "All-American Kennedy-clan suits".

"He's managed to learn to keep it simple. He's got a tailor who makes his clothes fit really well, and he always looks like he's put a little thought into" his dress, associate editor Richard Dorment, who helped put the list together, told USA Today.

In all, 23 men from sports, Hollywood, business and world politics were listed by the magazine.

"We looked at thousands of men from around the world," Dorment said. "The factors we consider are consistency and care, men who take the time and energy" about their appearance.

Rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z landed at the No. 2 spot while Sen. Barack Obama was No. 4., French President Nicolas Sarkozy No. 6 and San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker was No. 23.
