Frightening Confrontation With Bear In Tahoe Home

Posted: 11:09 am PDT August 27, 2007Updated: 12:24 pm PDT August 27, 2007

A black bear twice charged a sheriff's deputy inside a Lake Tahoe-area home early Monday before it was shot and killed, authorities said.

A homeowner in the Christmas Valley area called deputies around 3:30 a.m. to report a bear was in his kitchen and he was holed up with his dog in a bedroom, the El Dorado County sheriff's office said.

Lt. Les Lovell said the first deputy to arrive entered through the front door, stomping his feet and yelling, hoping to get the bear to flee out an open sliding door.

Instead, the bear charged, and the deputy fired twice in self defense.

A third shot was fired when the bear charged again, Lovell said.

The 300-pound bear was found injured in the backyard and destroyed.

Two cubs found later at the residence were captured and taken to Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care Inc., and wildlife rescue group.

Lovell said the sheriff's office "regrets being placed into a position of taking lethal action upon wildlife."
