Berkeley Teen Misses Homeroom In Dramatic Style

Posted: 9:23 am PST February 27, 2008

An unlicensed 16-year-old in a hurry to get to classes at Berkeley High School Wednesday morning, arrived in dramatic style when the SUV he was illegally driving flipped over and came to rest inches from the building.

Berkeley Police Sgt. Kevin Schofield said it was fortunate that no one was seriously injured in the crash.

"It happened just when school was beginning," he told KTVU. "So it was lucky no one was on the sidewalk when it happened."

Witnesses told police the driver lost control of the KIA while turning the corner in front of the school. The SUV careened out of control, flipped over and came to rest in a brick planter box inches from the building.

While shaken up, the 16-year-old was not seriously injured and was being held until his parents arrived.

Schofield said the SUV belonged to a relative and may also have been involved in a hit-and-run accident earlier in the morning near the school.
