Family Members Killed In SF Intersection Shooting

Posted: 6:06 pm PDT June 22, 2008Updated: 7:28 pm PDT June 23, 2008

The victims of a deadly altercation between motorists in a San Francisco intersection were a father and his teenage sons returning from a family outing, according to a report published Monday.

Anthony Bologna, 48, and his son, Michael Bologna, 19, were pronounced dead at the scene of Sunday's shooting. Another teenage son -- Matthew Bologna -- was being treated for life-threatening wounds at San Francisco General Hospital. A third son who was in the car escaped shaken but uninjured.

The San Francisco Chronicle, quoting a relative, said the boys and their father were returning from a family BBQ in Fairfield when the shooting occurred.

San Francisco police Sgt. Wilfred Williams said the shooting took place at 3:10 p.m. Sunday in the intersection of Maynard St. and Congdon St. in the city’s Excelsior District.

The vehicles traveling in opposite directions on Congdon stopped in the intersection and “an altercation took place” and shots rang out, according to Williams.

“We’re not sure if it was road rage or the parties knew each other,” Williams said. “It’s under investigation.”

The fatal volley left the car – which crashed into other parked cars – riddled with bullet holes and left bodies covered with a coroner’s tarp in the front seat.

San Francisco homicide investigators canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses. There was no immediate description of the shooter’s car which fled the scene.
