Victim Identified In Wedding Shooting

Posted: 8:51 am PDT August 10, 2008Updated: 5:43 pm PDT August 10, 2008

Police identified 50-year-old Nicolas Lopez Sunday as the man who was killed in a shooting that injured two others during a wedding reception at a Richmond home Saturday night.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 3400 block of Maricopa Avenue around 11:30 p.m., said Sgt. Bisa French. Lopez was found dead and two other victims were taken to an area hospital to be treated for their wounds.

A 10-year-old girl struck by the gunfire was listed in stable condition and a 31-year-man was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

French said several men had arrived at the wedding reception and one of them shot into a crowd. The motive is under investigation.

"We don't know if somebody from the party actually knew them or not," she said.

Police believe the suspects fled in a vehicle but no description of the vehicle was immediately available.

According to French, officers had responded to the area about 20 minutes before the shooting on reports of a disturbance. It was not immediately clear whether the reported disturbance had involved the suspects or wedding reception attendees.

French estimated that more than 60 people were in attendance at the reception.
