BERKELEY, Calif. -- The Alameda County Coroner Thursday identified the body of a man found stuffed into a container and set on fire in Berkeley last week. The victim was 48-year-old Peter Whigham, who lived in Richmond. His burning body was found shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Dec. 30 in Eastshore Park, the head of a hiking trail in Eastshore State Park near the Berkeley Marina, about 30 yards west of Interstate Highway 80 and about a quarter-mile north of University Avenue. There is no information about a suspect or motive, but Whigham's van and dog are missing. The van is a white 2000 Chevrolet, license plate number 6-E-M-B-9-0-5. Anyone with information is asked to call East Bay Regional Park Police. Sgt. Tyrone Davis of the East Bay Regional Park District's Police Department said the man had been stuffed inside a container, doused with an accelerant and then set ablaze. Passing motorists reported the fire, which led to the discovery of the body. He said it's unclear if the man was killed elsewhere and then brought to that spot or whether he was burned alive. Davis said he is optimistic witnesses will come forward to help solve the case.
