Walnut Creek Woman To Face Additional Human Trafficking Charges

A Walnut Creek real estate agent accused of keeping a Peruvian nanny as an indentured servant has been charged with four additional crimes related to the case, according to a Feb. 4 federal grand jury indictment.

The original indictment filed in June charged 45-year-old Mabelle de la Rosa Dann, also known as Mabelle de la Rosa Crabbe, with one count of harboring an illegal alien for personal financial gain, also known as "human trafficking," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

In addition to the original charge, a new indictment charges Dann with visa fraud, conspiracy to commit visa fraud, forced and attempted forced labor and unlawful conduct regarding documents in furtherance of servitude, according to the indictment.

The document alleges that Dann conspired with other unnamed people to fraudulently obtain a visitors visa for the victim, Zoraida Pena-Canal, to bring her to the United States.

Once Pena-Canal arrived in the Bay Area, Dann allegedly took her visa, passport and other government-issued identification from her to prevent her from leaving, according to the indictment.

From July 2006 to April 2008, Dann allegedly forced Pena-Canal to work in her home as a domestic servant by threatening to harm her, threatening to harm others and threatening to use the law against her, according to the indictment.

Dann is scheduled to appear in federal court in Oakland on Feb. 18 to be arraigned on the new charges and to set a date for trial, according to Jack Gillund, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office.
