SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -- The Alameda County coroner's bureau has identified a 24-year-old San Leandro man as the victim of a fatal drunken driving accident that occurred in the city Friday night. Isidro Velazquez-Mendoza was a passenger in a Ford Explorer that crashed into a tree on the east side of East 14th Street, near Belleview Drive, at about 11 p.m., police said. The driver of the car, a 22-year-old San Leandro man, lost control of the car near Garcia Avenue and went into a locked-wheel skid, according to police. The Explorer struck the tree and caught fire, with the driver trapped inside. The driver was extricated from the vehicle by the fire department and was transported to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition, police said.Daniel Scott witnessed the crash and grabbed his camera after hearing a loud screech. He says police officers arrived first and put out the flames before firefighters got there. “It was a tragedy,” said Scott. “I'd never seen an accident like that. I mean, the car was completely wrapped around the tree.” A preliminary investigation indicates that speed and alcohol were both factors in the crash, according to police.
