The tight-knit Marin community of Inverness was in mourning Monday following the death of a 22-year-old soldier in Iraq in a possible apparent friendly fire incident.

Jake Robert Velloza, a Tomales High graduate, was killed over the weekend in Mosul, Iraq, according to his grandfather.

The Associated Press reported over the weekend that an Iraqi soldier opened fire on a U.S. military team Saturday, killing two American soldiers and wounding three. The U.S. military said the incident remained under investigation.

The Velloza family was informed Sunday morning of the sad news.

"It's hard because especially for the mother and dad because that's their only son," said Jake's grandmother, May Velloza. "Bob said 'I shouldn't be burying my son; he should be burying his mother and father,' which is true. He had a life to live he was only 22."

Leon Feliciano, Velloza’s high school football coach, said the young soldier had dreamed of becoming a Ranger.

"We talked about college, but he said, 'No, Coach, I want to be a Ranger doing special ops,'" Feliano told the Bay Area Media Group. "He was set on his goals. He was one of those young men who knew what he wanted to do and did it. Service to his country is what appealed to him."

Jake Velloza's parents flew to Delaware Sunday night so they can be at Dover Air Force Base when their son's body arrives. Funeral arrangements are still being made.
