Rodeo Teen Arrested In Shooting And Carjacking

Posted: 3:23 pm PDT July 2, 2009

A 19-year-old Rodeo man has been arrested in connection with an attempted carjacking that caused the victim to strike a pedestrian and drag him to his death in Rodeo in June, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's office announced.

The incident began shortly after 4 p.m. on June 23 in the 1000 block of Mariposa Street, where 69-year-old James Gilbeaux asked his friend David Delgado, a 28-year-old San Pablo resident, for a ride.

As Gilbeaux was walking around Delgado's truck to get in, an armed man approached the vehicle and attempted to carjack it, Sheriff's Capt. Daniel Terry said.

Delgado reportedly resisted and the gunman fired four to five shots.

Delgado stepped on the gas and was attempting to flee when he accidentally struck Gilbeaux and dragged him 100 to 150 feet, Terry said.

The gunman fled on foot from the area before deputies arrived, Terry said.

Gilbeaux was taken to Doctors Medical Center in San Pablo, where he died from his injuries, Terry said.

Delgado remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Witnesses corroborated his story, Terry said.

Several days after the incident, detectives identified Cordero Kelly, 19, as the alleged carjacker and a warrant was issued for his arrest, Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said today.

At about noon on Wednesday detectives spotted Kelly as he was leaving a house on Magazine Street in Vallejo, Lee said.

They followed his car and stopped it on Interstate Highway 80 near Willow Avenue. Kelly was arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into county jail in Martinez.

Detectives plan to bring the case to the district attorney's office Monday, Lee said.
