Suspect Leads CHP On Three-Hour Chase To Santa Rosa

A Santa Rosa man who led the California Highway Patrol and Santa Rosa police on a pursuit that drew a crowd of onlookers was arrested for evading police late Thursday night.

Cody Mittleman, 19, was booked into the Sonoma County Jail under $30,000 bail and will be arraigned in Sonoma County Superior Court on Monday afternoon.

Sgt. Lisa Banayat said Santa Rosa police were notified by the CHP at 10:15 p.m. Thursday that they were pursuing a white, four-door, Toyota Camry registered to a Sailing Hawk Avenue address on U.S. Highway 101 in Petaluma.

The driver was wanted for traffic violations, including felony evading a peace officer, and was driving in a reckless manner, she said.

The Toyota had run over spike strips and was driving on four flat tires before it entered the Santa Rosa Police Department's jurisdiction, Banayat said. Santa Rosa police dispatched a K9 officer to join the pursuit, Banayat said.

The Toyota drove through downtown Santa Rosa, onto state Highway 12 and into the Sailing Hawk Avenue neighborhood but did not stop, Banayat said.

The Toyota returned to state Highway 12 with the CHP, Santa Rosa police and a Sonoma County sheriff's helicopter in pursuit. The driver made several U-turns as it drove east and west on state Highway 12.

A number of pedestrians and vehicles lined Highway 12 and gathered at intersections to watch the pursuit pass by, she said.

At Acacia Lane on westbound Highway 12, police used a pursuit intervention technique to stop the Toyota and Santa Rosa police took Mittleman into custody, Banayat said.
