Children's, Tenant's Rights Group To Rally For Eviction Law Changes

SAN FRANCISCO -- Children's and tenant's rights groups planned to rally outside San Francisco City Hall Monday in support of newly proposed legislation that would prohibit landlords from evicting tenants with children under so-called "owner move-ins." An ordinance introduced by Supervisor Eric Mar would amend the city's residential rent ordinance to extend a prohibition on certain owner move-in evictions, when landlords evict tenants in order to move in themselves or to allow their relatives to move in. Such a prohibition already exists under city law for seniors, those who have lived in multi-unit apartment buildings for at least 10 years, disabled persons or those suffering from life-threatening illnesses. Mar's ordinance would also disallow move-in evictions for families with children under 18 that have been living in a unit for at least a year. The Board of Supervisors' Land Use and Economic Development Committee was scheduled to consider the ordinance at 1 p.m. Supporters planned to rally at noon.
