A labor dispute in the heart of San Francisco reached a new level Thursday night as hundreds of hotel workers took to the streets in protest.Workers were hoping to send a clear message to hotel management. Some tried to hammer that message home with civil disobedience and ended up in police custody. With the big corporate hotels as the back drop, workers loudly told management to keep their hands off health care,Hundreds marched the streets surrounding Union Square, rallying outside the Grand Hyatt and the Westin St. Francis.Front entrances were blocked, leaving many guests looking confused. And those who sat in protest said they didn't care how long it would take to make their message clear. When asked what she was willing to get arrested for, Unite Here Local 2 member Linda Knighten replied For families. For our health care. For our co-workers. For our dignity, for our rights.”Hotel workers then blocked cable car traffic on Powell Street. Organizers said 92 people were arrested.Thursday night's protest revolves around the 9,000 unionized hotel employees who have been working without a contract. The union -- Unite Here Local 2 -- sais hotel chains want employees to shoulder a bigger portion of their health care expenses. What they want to do is increase the co-payments and require members to pay a significant amount more, which would basically throw people off the road of health care, said union president Mike Casey.Elena Duran, a server at the Palace Hotel, said a strike down the road is a possibility. “I have three children, two in university one in high school,” said Duran. So if I don't have health care can't pay for their universities?”In 2004, the city's tourism industry took a hit for two weeks when hotel workers walked out during contract negotiations.“It was huge there wasn't big hotel in the city without a picket line in front of it,” said Knighten. “It was unbelievable and we did hurt their business.”Thursday night, state assemblyman Tom Ammiano told workers that Sacramento stands behind them. The union said not every hotel has offered a new contract, but what they've seen so far is disappointing"They are using the economy as an excuse not to pay people's heath care," said Casey. "We are talking about men and women making $40,000 a year and requiring us to pay for health care as these guys have made billions of dollars in profits over the last several years."Calls to the corporate hotel headquarters not returned Thursday night.San Francisco police said they arrested close to 100 people. One man was heard to yell "The fight is just beginning!" as he was being driven away .
