“Witnesses described this as a robbery,” Bottomley said.

Authorities said Orozco was in his car, drinking milkshakes and talking with the three men approached the car.

At least two of the men were armed, police said, when they knocked on the car window and demanded cash in a crime-ridden area of the city.

The unidentified girlfriend told authorities at least one of the men dragged her out of the car and as she was lying on the ground, she heard the shots. She was not injured in the attack and the three African American males wearing black hooded sweatshirts fled down the street.

Authorities said they believed the robbery was a random act and that Orozco did not know his assailants.

Investigators were talking with the girlfriend and neighbors in an effort to get better description of the three men, who remained at large.
