Posted: 6:22 pm PST November 7, 2009

Police arrested a 17-year-old Aptos boy in Santa Cruz Thursday for possession of a dangerous weapon and fighting in public after officers responded to a reported gang fight.

At about 1:50 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to reports of a fight involving a bat in the 500 block of Caledonia Street, Santa Cruz police said.

As officers arrived, the suspects involved in the fight were seen getting into vehicles and fleeing. Some of the officers set up a perimeter around the area and stopped one of the vehicles believed to be involved in the fight, according to police.

The 17-year-old occupant of the vehicle was discovered to be a Sureno gang member who was on probation.

A search revealed that the boy had a dagger concealed in his waistband, and a baseball bat wrapped with electrical tape and a blue bandanna was found in the trunk of the vehicle, police said.

The suspect was arrested and booked into juvenile hall.

No other participants in the fight were located by police. Anyone with information about the incident can call the Police Department's anonymous tip line at (831) 420-5995.
