BERKELEY, Calif. -- Oakland police have arrested a suspect who reportedly was taken into custody in connection with a body found in Berkeley's Aquatic Park early Friday morning.An off-duty Berkeley police officer found a woman lying on the shoreline shortly after 4 a.m. on the southeast side of the park near the intersection of Bolivar Drive and Potter Street, according to police spokesman Officer Andrew Frankel. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.Soon afterward, police announced that the case was being investigated as a homicide. Frankel said the victim appeared to have been shot twice. The slaying is the fifth in Berkeley this year.Oakland police arrested 38-year-old Curtis Martin at an address near the intersection of 24th and Chestnut in Oakland at approximately 1 p.m., authorities said.While Berkeley police would not say what the connection was between the arrest and the body found, they did say they were confident that the man in custody was responsible for the woman's death."At this point, I can just tell you we've got the suspect in custody and we're confident we've got the right guy," said Frankel.Police are still withholding the identity of the woman pending notification of next of kin.Earlier in the day, police in Berkeley have blocked off a portion of Aquatic Park to investigate the apparent homicide.The area is known for criminal activity, especially after dark."South Aquatic Park has its share of problems,” said Officer Frankel. “A reputation for drug use and prostitution in the past. I don't know if this relates to any of that."Berkeley police said they expect to reopen this portion of the park to the public sometime later Friday evening, though there are no plans to increase overnight patrols through the area.
