Students And Workers Plan Strike At UC Berkeley

Posted: 10:52 pm PST November 17, 2009Updated: 11:57 pm PST November 17, 2009

A campus strike is being planned for Wednesday at UC Berkeley.

University workers from two unions are upset with furloughs and pink slips, and students are upset with new and higher fees.

The action comes as UC Regents gear up for a vote on a 32 per cent student fee hike.

"I want my nieces and I want my nephew to be able to come to this university if they choose to come," said UC employee Katherine Renfro.

Workers are worried about jobs. UC campuses are laying off 1,900 employees and eliminating 3,800 positions. Some union employees are working without a contract.

"We're calling an unfair labor practices strike since we're still without a contract after 17 months," said Tanya Smith of the University Professional and Technical Employees Union.

University officials said state budget cuts have left the UC system with a $1.2 billion budget shortfall.

The full Board of Regents is scheduled to vote Thursday on whether to raise undergraduate student fees by about $2,500 between now and 2011.

The Regents will also discuss ways to make more financial aid available.

"They're talking about different scholarship efforts including 'Project You Can,' which is really going to bolster and set new targets for our fundraising activities across all the campuses," said Leslie Sepuka, who works with the office of the university president.

"I see students really, really, really stressed out," said Ricardo Gomez of the group Berkeley Students Against Cuts. "Not knowing whether or not they're going to be here next semester."

Strike organizers hope to reprise last September's protest which brought thousands of Cal students and workers to Sproul Plaza.

Gomez said not everyone will be able take time off from classes, "Maybe they don't strike all three days or all two days, but they get their parents to talk to the legislature."

The union that represents 800 Cal research and technical workers said 200 members will strike Wednesday and they'll ask workers at campus construction projects to stop work in support.
