San Francisco police were on the scene of a downtown labor protest by hundreds of union workers Monday evening.Members of SEIU Local 1021 gathered at around 5 p.m. at Civic Center Plaza to protest impending layoffs and pay cuts to city workers. In a press release, the union said that the rally was to send a message “to halt unwise, unfair and unnecessary job and service losses to result from imminent city layoffs and wage reductions” to more than 500 city public health and school district employees.Police gathered after the rally moved to Market Street at 6 p.m. and some protesters started blocking traffic. There were reports that police made began making arrests at around 6:30 p.m., but so far there has been no word on how many protesters were taken into custody. This is the same union that took over Mayor Newsom's office at City Hall on November 13 to protest cuts to the city budget.
