HAYWARD, Calif. -- A 19-month-old boy drowned Wednesday morning in his family's swimming pool in Hayward, a police lieutenant said. One of his parents found him floating face down in the home's swimming pool in the 24000 block of Pontiac Street at about 10 a.m. and immediately called authorities, Lt. Larry Vargas said. Police officers and firefighters responded to the home and transported the boy to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he died at about 11 a.m., Vargas said. The death is being investigated as an accidental drowning, according to Vargas, who said the child had managed to "manipulate" the door to the rear yard while his parent was distracted.
