Campbell Elects Country's Youngest Openly-Gay Mayor

CAMPBELL,Calif. -- The city of Campbell swore in a new mayor Tuesday night a politician who carries three distinctive labels into office.Evan Low is 26-years-old, gay and Asian American, making him the nation’s youngest openly gay mayor.He has been service on the Campbell City Council for three years.“Being young, some people might say there's not enough experience," Low told KTVU before his swearing in. "Being Asian, certainly, I think that's a positive being culturally diverse. And being a member of the LGBT community, adversity builds character.”At least one Campbell resident KTVU spoke with saw no issue with Low taking office.“Does he know what the people in the area what they need and what the issues are in the Campbell area?" Hassan Sihpolo said. "Other than that, I don't think age or others matter.”But Janee Teague questioned the new mayor’s age.“I don't have any problem with him being Asian or being gay. Not at all," Teague said. "But somebody being so young it almost makes me wonder if they have enough experience to be in that position.”Mayor Low said in his inaugural speech that he realizes he has special responsibilities, but his goal is to represent everyone and ensure the quality of live in this city does not deteriorate despite budget constraints.He has already been named one of the most influential Asian Americans under 30.But when asked if he has higher political ambitions, he simply said for now he is dedicated to serving Campbell.
