BERKELEY, Calif. -- UC Berkeley officials had no comment Tuesday after it was announced that no charges would be filed for now against any of the people arrested in Friday night's attack on the Chancellor’s home pending further investigation.Earlier Tuesday in Alameda County Court, a brief cheer went up in the hallway when the decision was announced."They have up until the statute of limitations to charge and hopefully they won't,” said national lawyers guild attorney john viola. “we're going to continue to press that there be no charges filed in these cases. At the Chancellor Robert Birgeneau's home repair work continued where police said late Friday a crowd of about 75 protesters marched to protest upcoming increases in student fees and tuition.Authorities said several in the group smashed windows and threw objects including lit torches at the residence and at responding police.Eight people were arrested and had been held until Tuesday's arraignment. Several others ran away when more police arrived. The chancellor and his wife were inside at the time and have said they were frightened by the attack and have called those responsible "criminals not activists."In the large crowd that gathered for Tuesday afternoon's court hearing, many said the real outrage should be over the tuition increases and proposed layoffs of university workers..."I think it's really important not to let those actions distract us from the issue at hand, which is that there is going to be an increase of 32-percent in tuition next year,” said protest supporter Heidi Vitlacil. “Education is simply...it's a necessity."Those held in the alleged attacks will be released Tuesday evening from Santa Rita Jail. Many who would not speak to KTVU on camera said they too are outraged by the fee increases, but also said they are upset at what they call violent tactics by a handful of protesters. They claim many of those troublesome protesters are not students.Protesters said they intend to continue opposing the tuition hikes with peaceful demonstrations.
