Deadly Violence Continues To Grip Vallejo

A man was shot on a Vallejo street late Monday night, the latest act in a wave of violence that has gripped the East Bay community over the last eight days.

Vallejo police Lt. Jim O'Connell said officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Sonoma Boulevard and Illinois Street at around 10:30 p.m.

Arriving officers found a man suffering a gunshot wound to the torso.

The victim was airlifted to a Bay Area hospital, O'Connell said. Police did not release information about the victim's condition.

The shooting added to wave of violence that has included a videotaped beating of a city employee, two homicides, three stabbings and the shooting of an ice cream truck driver.

Lt. Able Tonorio said the surge has detectives working non-stop for the police department that has endured a reduction due to the city’s budget crisis.

“We are working as hard as we can with what we have,” he said. “We have no choice -- that’s what we will continue to do.”

Mayor Osby Davis has made few comments about the outbreak of violence.

“I don’t have a solution for crime in our city in terms of stopping people from committing crimes,” he said. “We have a statement we will make with respect with to the things the police department is doing and have been doing.”

Anyone with information about the latest shooting or possible suspects is asked to contact the Vallejo Police Department at (707) 648-4321.
