Windsor Man Rearrested After Using Hidden Key To Unlock Handcuffs

A Windsor man briefly escaped police custody Monday after using a key he hid in his mouth to unlock his handcuffs, police said Tuesday.

Petaluma police went to a home in the 2200 block of Petaluma Boulevard North at about 9:50 p.m. to serve the man, 28-year-old Joshua Begley, with an emergency protective order, Sgt. Andrew Urton said.

Begley drove away before police arrived but officers pulled him over and served him with the order, Urton said. He was arrested and handcuffed after he showed symptoms of being under the influence of a stimulant.

As he was being led to a patrol car, Begley unlocked the handcuffs, broke away from police and hid in the nearby Sonomarin Landscaping Materials supply yard, Urton said.

Officer Mike Page found Begley hiding under a pile of bark with the help of a police dog and Begley was rearrested, Lt. Mike Cook said.

Begley had apparently freed himself using a key he had brought with him and hidden in his mouth before he was handcuffed, Cook said.

He was booked into Sonoma County jail on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance and escaping police custody.
