Amtrak Train Slams Into Stalled AC Transit Bus

OAKLAND, Calif. -- An Amtrak commuter train, traveling from Sacramento to San Jose, slammed into an AC Transit bus that had stalled in the middle of a crossing in Oakland, ripping it in half, officials said.AC Transit spokesman Clarence Johnson said. the collision occurred at about 6:30 a.m. at the crossing at of 66th Avenue and San Leandro Street.Officials said the driver was frantically attempting to restart the articulated bus when he saw the train bearing down on the vehicle. He leaped out of the way moments before the collision. The bus, which was heading into service for the day, and fortunately was empty at the time of the crash, the spokesman said. "There were no passengers on board," Johnson said. "The driver is OK, the driver exited the vehicle before the accident."The force of the impact sheered the bus in half leaving one section next to the tracks and the other half about 100 feet at the intersection.Amtrak spokeswoman Tracy Connell said there also were no injuries among the train’s 40 passengers and crews.She had no estimate as to when service would return to normal on the busy rail line spur that is used for both commercial and commuter trains. . The Oakland police and fire department personnel were called to the scene.
