CUPERTINO, Calif. -- A suspect in two murders who was fatally shot by police on Sunday in Cupertino was identified Monday by the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office as 34-year-old Sonny Lopez. The San Jose man was wanted for fatally shooting his uncle, 49-year-old Larry Lopez, who was found dead inside his Fremont home in the 100 block of Sycamore Street on March 1, according to Fremont police. Lopez was also considered a possible suspect in the fatal beating of a 96-year-old man during a home-invasion robbery in the 20000 block of Wardell Road in Saratoga on Dec. 3, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said. According to sheriff's Sgt. Rick Sung, two men broke into the home, beat Charlie Maridon and his 64-year-old daughter and fled. Both victims were found the next morning by a landscaper who worked at the home. Maridon's daughter survived, but Maridon died of his injuries on Dec. 18, Sung said. The second suspect in that case is still being sought. On Sunday, Fremont SWAT officers and members of the Santa Clara County sheriff's Emergency Response Team were staking out an apartment complex in the 10000 block of Miller Avenue in Cupertino, where Lopez was believed to be staying, according to Sung. At about 2 p.m., members of the Fremont SWAT team, in full tactical police uniform, saw Lopez leaving the apartment, confronted him and identified themselves as police officers, Sung said. Lopez, who had been armed with a loaded handgun, then allegedly fled north on Miller Avenue and during a foot pursuit, "several shots were fired," Sung said. Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact circumstances surrounding Sunday's shooting are still being investigated, Sung said.
