Details On Danbury Federal Correctional Institution

When Martha Stewart was sentenced to five months in prison Friday, U.S. District Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum accepted a defense request to recommend to federal prison officials that Stewart serve her time at a minimum-security facility in Danbury, Conn., close to her home in Westport. Here are some details about the institution.

Nickname: Club Fed

Location: Danbury, Connecticut

Security: Low (adjacent prison camp where Stewart will be is minimum security)

Population: 1,100 inmates, plus 200 in camp. A high percentage of the women at Danbury are serving time for immigration or drug charges.

History: Danbury Federal Correctional Institution opened in 1940. The facility housed its first higher-profile inmates when several Watergate figures served sentences there during the 1970s. The adjacent prison camp, which offers more freedom, opened in 1981 and became exclusively for women in 1988. The prison itself became an all-women facility in 1994.

Amenities: "Club Fed" has a prison yard with a baseball field, volleyball net and walking track as well as a a gymnasium used for Pilates, yoga and aerobics. There are educational classes and crafts workshops available to inmates. All personal items must be bought at the prison commissary. Prized items include cigarettes and fresh fruit.

The women inmates sleep in small, bunk-bedded dorm rooms, with some housing as many as eight women together. Inmates spend their days working in the kitchen or maintaining the grounds. As far as communication with the outside world, there are only pay phones that are prone to long lines.

Famous inmates: G. Gordon Liddy, Leona Helmsley, Michael Milken and Sun Myung Moon are among the well-known people who have served time at Danbury Federal Correctional Institution.
