SAN RAFAEL -- A construction worker was accidentally knocked off a platform below the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge Friday and a fellow worker risked his life by diving off the structure into the San Francisco Bay waters in a futile attempt to save his friend's life.
Caltrans spokesman Bob Haus confirmed that a construction worker who was knocked off the bridge had died. Haus said the accident was reported at 2:17 p.m. and that he was informed at around 2:45 p.m. that the worker had died. He said the man and another worker who jumped into the water to try to save him were ironworkers who worked for the Tutor Saliba Construction Company. The men were working on a platform below the deck of the bridge near Pier 30 on the Marin side -- about 30-feet above the water, Haus said. The second man who went into the water was recovered and was taken away by ambulance, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
