SAN FRANCISCO -- California has been at the forefront of anti-smoking legislation. San Francisco is now attempting to go one step further with a proposed ban on outdoor smoking in city parks.
The item is expected to come to a vote at Tuesday's meeting of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier says outdoor smoking in parks is hurting San Francisco's recreation areas.Under the proposal, violators could face a fine of $100 and up to $500 for repeat offenders. At Washington Square Park in North Beach Monday night there were plenty of people who don't smoke, but still had trouble with the idea of banning cigarettes in the park.Supervisor Aaron Peskin who represents North Beach says an outdoor smoking ban goes too far, but there are some who think keeping smoking out of city parks will be better for everyone. The smoking ban would not include city beaches -- that's state jurisdiction -- or the Presidio, which is federal property.City golf courses would also be untouched by the legislation. Alioto-pier says a smoking ban at golf courses could hurt city revenue and golf courses tend to have plenty of grounds keepers to pick up cigarette butts.A vote on the smoking ban is expected Tuesday.
