SACRAMENTO -- Thelma Shelley, the widow of former San Francisco mayor and U.S. Rep. Jack Shelley and the mother of Secretary of State Kevin Shelley, died shortly after noon Friday in a San Francisco hospital, a family spokesman said. She was 84. Shelley died at 12:15 p.m. at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco, where she was rushed by ambulance Feb. 2 with respiratory failure, said spokesman Sam Singer. Singer said Shelley never left the hospital after being admitted. From 1982 until retiring in 1998, she was managing director of the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center. Previously she served as assistant managing director and manager from 1976 to 1978 of the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau Swig Pavilion/Visitor Information Center. From 1974 to 1976 she was assistant to the director of the San Francisco Mayor's Office of Employment and Training. Thelma Shelley was chief of staff and administrative aide to Rep. Shelley for three years before they married in 1953. Jack Shelley served as mayor of San Francisco between 1964 and 1968. He died in 1974. Singer said no funeral services or arrangements have been announced. Shelley is survived by her son, who resigned as secretary of state Feb. 4, and two daughters.
